How Pope Benedict XVI Taught me to Hope After Sexual Abuse
by Faith Hakesley, Clergy Abuse Survivor

There’s a lot going on in the Catholic Church and in the world around us that may cause many of us to throw our hands up in frustration and maybe even despair. However, we have the assurance of God’s presence and of his promises and, much like other virtues, hope is something that we have to choose to cling to in spite of our pain and uncertainty.

There have been many times over the course of my own life when I have been on the brink of despair. I suffered months of sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted parish priest when I was 15 years old, lost my oldest brother unexpectedly due to a heart condition a year later, and have endured numerous health scares including cancer and a heart condition that nearly took my life. There have been many times when my faith has been very weak and, as a result, hope has been difficult to hold on to. That changed in April 2008 when, along with four other victims of clergy abuse from the Archdiocese of Boston, I was given the life-changing opportunity to meet with Pope Benedict XVI during his apostolic trip to the United States.

At the time of this meeting, five years had passed since a criminal trial had put my rapist behind bars. I had made leaps and bounds on my healing journey, but I was still struggling in more ways than one. A piece of advice from my mother had kept me going since a time of particular struggle and uncertainty before the trial. She encouraged me to look for God’s “glimmers of grace.” These are his little gifts to us that bring us joy, reassure us of his love and lead us to hope. Sometimes, God sends certain individuals into our lives to be glimmers of grace; for me, Pope Benedict XVI became one such glimmer.

I listened intently to Pope Benedict’s homily at a packed Washington Nationals Stadium in Washington, D.C., on April 17, 2008. He spoke of the sex abuse scandal and of hope, love, forgiveness and of keeping God’s children safe. He asked Catholics to love their priests and to affirm them, and he encouraged all to pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and conversion. At that point in time, I had still not forgiven my rapist, and in that moment, I felt as though the Holy Father was speaking directly to me. Perhaps his words were not what I wanted to hear, but they were what I needed to hear. The closing words of his homily particularly struck me: “Those who have hope must live different lives! By your prayers, by the witness of your faith, by the fruitfulness of your charity, may you point the way toward that vast horizon of hope which God is even now opening up to his Church, and indeed to all humanity: the vision of a world reconciled and renewed in Christ Jesus, our Savior.”

Despite the good that had come into my life, hope was something that still did not come easily. Pope Benedict’s words were of great encouragement to me. I knew that choosing to live the hope-filled kind of life the pope described wasn’t going to come easy. Just as healing wasn’t going to happen overnight, neither would hope be restored overnight, but hope was possible.

Later that afternoon, as I knelt in the chapel at the apostolic nunciature preparing for the Holy Father to arrive, I struggled to think of the right words to say when my time with him came. With tears welling up in my eyes, I gave myself over to God as I prayed for the courage to say whatever needed to be said. As I recalled the pope’s words from his Mass earlier that day, there was a peaceful reassurance deep within my heart that I was not alone.

When I heard the door at the back of the room open, I turned around just as the pontiff entered. I couldn’t take my eyes off the slight, old, humble-looking man. Pope Benedict smiled as he walked toward the front of the chapel where he knelt and led us in prayer. When the Holy Father arose, Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley of Boston presented him with a large book containing the names of 1,476 known victims of abuse from the Archdiocese of Boston. Pope Benedict was visibly moved. His eyes teared up, and his face suddenly bore on it such pain and anguish that I had a sudden desire to run up to him and hug and comfort him.

YouTube Censored This Video. Why Would the Who Push Abortions on Africa? Dr. Wahome Ngare on the Dr. J Show, ep. 63

YouTube originally censored this video because it claimed that vaccines cause sterility and they don't allow any discussion of that. Why? Because the WHO said that no vaccines cause sterility.

Dr. Wahome Ngare is a member of the Kenyan Catholic Doctor's Association. He has been working in Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2000. He and his fellow doctors discovered the WHO vaccine distributed in Kenya contained components which caused sterility in many recipients.

Olympic Women's Boxing Fiasco | Ruth Reacts

The IOC and big tech can't suppress what we all know to be true. A man is defined by his chromosomes, not his DSD. Imane Khelif, for whatever else he might be, isn't a woman, and doesn't deserve applause for being allowed to beat up actual women. Dr. Morse explains six things we have learned from this fiasco.

Ruth Institute Podcast: Family Is the Basis of It All with Joanna Hyatt

In this conversation, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Joanna Hyatt discuss the importance of building a foundation of truth for young mothers, the impact of past trauma on parenting, and how to navigate difficult conversations about sexuality with children. They explore Joanna's undercover investigations in the abortion industry, the need for parents to empower their children to discuss tough topics, and the connection between sex, babies, and family. The discussion culminates in the idea of raising 'rebels' who challenge the norms of the sexual revolution and embrace a holistic understanding of sexuality.

Joanna is a Christian speaker and speaks at many different events each year. She was the director of the Los Angeles based national STD and Teen Pregnancy prevention program. She previously worked as the Director of Content, Fundraising and Spokeswoman. She is married to a film director and has four beautiful children.

Ruth Institute Podcast: Abuse, Confusion, MtF Transition, Euphoria, Despair, Hope | Walt Heyer's Transgender Story

Walt Heyer had it all: married to a beautiful woman, father of two wonderful children, he got to work on the Apollo space mission, and was even a high ranking employee at a big tech firm. But he had a deep, dark secret, that he had kept from everyone as long as he could remember. He was a secret cross dresser. From the time he was 13 he had an alternate persona: Crystal West. He would act out as a transvestite at home secretly and continued his confused gender role-play as a married man. In the 1980's, he sought help from the best gender gender specialists and was proscribed the nascent WPATH protocol. He was given hormones, and MtF surgeries, and had his legal documentation changed to represent his new name: Laura Jensen. It brought him euphoria and relief - for eight years. Then it all came crashing down. Since his recovery of his God-given biology, Walt has campaigned for everyone impacted by transgender ideology to find healing and treated fairly.

Podcast: Doctors Protecting Children - Dr. Jill Simons

Far too often, the medical boards tend to gravitate towards what makes the most money or what is politically expedient, and that presents a problem for the members they represent, and the patients whose interests they are supposed to look after. Dr. Jill Simons is the executive director of the American College of Pediatricians which was formed precisely because the American Academy of Pediatrics started down the path of what was politically expedient.

Dr. Jill Simons is a Board-Certified Pediatrician. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed residency, also at the University of Wisconsin. As a resident she was involved in child advocacy issues and co-authored papers on Fitness for Youth, and Child and Infant Car Restraint Safety. She was in private practice in Minnesota until becoming Executive director of The American College of Pediatricians.

Dr. Simons served several years as Chairman of Pediatrics for Mercy and Unity Hospitals from and helped establish the hospitals’ NICU and pediatric trauma programs. She was ...

WPATH files and the Cass Report Expose Transgenderism

The U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS) study found “remarkably weak evidence” to support gender transitioning minors and young adults. “We are not surprised,” said Ruth Institute president Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D. “We’ve been monitoring reports from detransitioners for a while. The tragedy is that doctors performed these untested interventions in the first place. We are, in effect, gathering data by experimenting on children.”

Morse continued, “The burden of proof should have always been on the side of those claiming these outrageous ‘treatments’ were both safe and effective. It should not be incumbent upon those opposed to ‘gender transitioning’ to prove this is a bad idea. Gender treatment doctors should have been forced to prove the efficacy of their so-called interventions.”

“To add insult to injury, the adult gender clinics are now resisting sharing their data with the University of York study. Evidently, the adult gender clinics are not confident ...

Adult Appreciation Week

In light of the Biden White House’s announcement of Transgender Day of Visibility, the Ruth Institute discerned the need for Adult Appreciation Week.

“’Transgender’ people are not the only ones who need and deserve ‘visibility,’” Ruth Institute president Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse said. “Therefore, the Ruth Institute will observe Adult Appreciation Week from Wednesday April 3 through Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

We honor adults who:
put their own interests aside for the benefit of the common good.
take responsibility for their mistakes.
support their families, even by doing unpleasant jobs.
tell the truth, even when inconvenient.
are in command of themselves, their impulses, and their egos.
wouldn’t dream of cheating others out of their justly earned awards.
do not knowingly mislead children.
protect the innocence of children.
present children with models of self-command, truthfulness, and fair play.
help children aspire to and achieve lives of responsible adulthood.

Khelif Is a Man - and Screaming Won't Change That
News Roundup 8/22/2024

The 2024 Olympic Games are over and done, but the controversies they engendered are merely beginning. You can pretty much guarantee that the IOC have become not just shills for the transgender crowd, but promoters of their insanity. For whatever problems the International Boxing Association may have had, they were up front about why the two male boxers were banned - and they have been consistent about that. The funny thing is that the online trolls, who have long declared that genitalia does not determine sex, are now converted to it and will insist, shaking their fists at the heavens, that they were right all along and it is the "gender critical" folks who are caught in a hypocritical lie. It is pretty easy to spot, however, who is telling the truth, and who is committed to the Sexual Revolution. With apologies to the women cheated out of a medal to the IOC's ineptness, we present this week's News Roundup.

The Sexual State Strikes Again
News Roundup 7/31/2024

As many of you probably saw (or at least heard about) the Olympics in Paris included a bizarre, blasphemous, sexualized depiction of the Last Supper, complete with drag queens and a naked singer. The outrage was palpable enough for the organizers to cobble together a press conference to defend their terrible judgement and justify their poor taste, I mean apologize if people were offended. The officials bumbled around with their words, defended their actions based on France's commitment to free speech, and left with their hubris, just as confused as they were at the beginning that anyone could possibly object to a very normal recreation. It was a beautiful demonstration of how the Sexual State works - the elites, intent on power, misunderstanding the rest of the normal world, drunk on their own commitment to their revolutionary ideology, impose horrendous laws (or artistic interpretations) and are completely stunned when they go over like a lead balloon. Fortunately, this is just the Olympics, and the IOC, for its many flaws, doesn't have coercive power, like the provincial governments in Australia, or the US government.

Fortunately, we've documented loads of examples of the Sexual State and its malfeasance from the month of July. Feel free to read, and to share with your friends. The more people know, the better they can take action to oppose stuff like this. All this, and more, in a woefully late News Roundup!

London Breed Personifies the Elitist Sexual Revolution's Imposition
News Roundup 6/25/2024

If you needed any further proof of the insanity of the transgender ideology, you need look no further than the San Francisco Mayoral race. During one debate, the current mayor, London Breed, took time to showcase her weirdly expert knowledge on drag queens in order to prove her bona fides and stand out as the true champion of the little...guy. No need to show off her street cred about cleaning up the streets from actual feces, or stopping the crime that is so rampant, no, she is clearly an agent of the Sexual Revolution and continues the top-down imposition of perverse sexual attitudes and actions upon the people of San Francisco, who, however liberal they may be, probably just want the city streets to be safe and clean again. The Sexual Revolution is all about the power, and is clearly an elitist ideology being forced upon us.

All that, and unfortunately, much more in this week's News Roundup.
